Tentative Schedule

2-26-2012 Sunday Theme: Welcome to Washington

Arrival	Students arrive at airport/train station and met by Workshop staff
Registration	Students are assigned rooms and given Workshop schedules and program materials
Dinner	Hotel
Welcome Session	Meet Department of State officials and American Councils and American Civics Center staff. Workshop Director will provide an overview of the Workshop’s goals, activities, rules, etc.
Workshop	Students meet Workshop instructors and prepare for the week
Room Check	Workshop staff ensures students are in their rooms by curfew

2-27-2012 Monday Theme: Foundations and Freedoms

Breakfast	Hotel
First Amendment Seminar	First Amendment Scholar Focus – The First Amendment and Religious Liberty in American Public Life
Newseum Study Visit	Guided study visit of the Newseum. Focus – Free Press, Universal Rights and First Freedoms
Lunch	Newseum
Capitol Hill Workshop	Small-group logistic orientation of Capitol Hill
Monument Study Visit	Jefferson and George Mason Memorial Study Visit Focus – Universal Rights and First Freedoms
Dinner	Washington, D.C. neighborhood restaurant
Grassroots Leadership Session	Led by A-SMYLE and YES alumni Focus: Future project opportunities for A-SMYLE and YES students
Room Check	Workshop staff ensures participants are in their rooms by curfew

2-28-2012 Tuesday Theme: Citizen Rights and Responsibilities

Memorial Study Visit	Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial study visit Focus – Freedom, Democracy and Equality for All
Community Onsite Briefing	Visit to Washington, DC community-based NGO’s
Lunch	Washington, D.C. neighborhood restaurant
Monument Study Visit	Focus - FDR and the New Deal: Government and the Safety Net
Elections Seminar	Focus: Fair and Free Elections
Dinner	Washington D.C. neighborhood restaurant
Lafayette Park and White House Study Visit	On-site briefing Focus - First Amendment rights and Executive Branch powers
Capitol Hill Day Prep	Distribute and review schedule for Capitol Hill Day. Focus – Prepare to meet with congressional delegation
Room Check	Workshop staff ensures participants are in their rooms by curfew.

2-29-2012 Wednesday Theme: Public Policy Formulation

Breakfast	Hotel
Capitol Hill Meeting Day	Meet with Congressional delegation. Self- guided exploration of Capitol Hill (including Library of Congress and Supreme Court); lunch in Capitol Hill cafeterias.
Dinner	Washington, D.C. neighborhood restaurant
Cultural Event	NBA Basketball game
State Dept Meeting Prep	Review schedule, speaker bios, logistics Focus - Prepare to meet with Department of State officials
Room Check	Workshop staff ensures participants are in their rooms by curfew

3-1-2012 Thursday Theme: Leadership and Foreign Policy

Breakfast	Hotel
U.S. State Department Meeting	Meeting with U.S. State Department officials
Lunch	Food Court at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center
Radio/TV Program	Visit Woodrow Wilson Center for a taping of *dialogue* Focus: Empowering Citizens: The Developing Role of Social Media
Memorial Study Visit	Lincoln Memorial Study Visit Focus – Presidential Leadership
Dinner	Washington D.C. neighborhood restaurant
Grassroots Activity Simulation	Large group activity

3-2-2012 Friday Theme: American Culture and Taking Lessons Home

Breakfast	Hotel
Directed Options and Lunch	Smithsonian Museum and National Art Gallery Study Visit Focus -- Highlight the art and history of America’s diverse regions and culture
Closing Event - Take the Lessons Home	Evaluations; YES and A-SMYLE Alumni News; final instructor led workshop session
Final Dinner	Dinner for participants, staff and invited guests
Dance	Informal social.
Room Check	Workshop staff ensures participants are in their rooms by curfew

3-3-2012 Saturday Theme: Have a safe trip home

Wake-up Call	Time of participants’ wake-up calls will depend upon their flight time
Breakfast	Hotel
Departure	Workshop staff will escort students to the airport/train station
